Rules of Caribbean 21
Caribbean 21 takes the normal Blackjack rules and makes a few key changes. Some of the basic rules stay the same. For example, the goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Exceeding 21 still counts as a bust and results in an instant loss. Cards from 2-10 are valued at face value, while the Jack, Queen, and King are all valued at 10. However, things get interesting now, and some rules have changed.
- Aces Valued at 1 – One of the biggest changes between Caribbean 21 and regular Blackjack, is that Aces are valued at 1, not 1 or 11.
- The Best Hand – In regular Blackjack, the best possible hand is a 10-value card plus an Ace. However, in Caribbean 21, the best hand is two 10-value cards and an Ace.
- Best Hand 3:2 – Just like regular Blackjack, the best-valued hand pays out 3:2. All other wins payout even money.
- Dealer Wins Ties – In Caribbean 21, any tie results will mean the Dealer wins. This is done to compensate for several other player-friendly rules that improve your odds. Most versions of Blackjack treat a tie as a push.
- One Up Card – This is a rule taken from European Blackjack. At the start of the round, the player will receive their cards, and the dealer will receive a single card, face up. It is not until the player has finished with their hand that the dealer will receive their second card.
- Split Any – In regular Blackjack, players can only split when they have a pair of identical cards. In Caribbean 21, players can split their hands, no matter what cards they have been dealt.
- Double Any Cards – In addition to splitting any hand, players can double down on any hand. Most versions of Blackjack only allow doubling down when you have a pair. Players can also double down again, known as redoubling.
- Double after Split – Another unique feature of Caribbean 21 is that players can double down after splitting. They can choose to do this for one hand or both if they choose to.
- Surrender – If you ever think your hand has no chance of winning, you can surrender at any time in Caribbean 21. This will return half of your original bet to you rather than losing your entire bet.
- Insurance – If the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, players will be able to take out an insurance bet. The insurance bet needs to be 1.5x the original bet. If the dealer does land up getting two more 10-value cards and getting Caribbean Blackjack, the insurance bet is paid out 9:1.
How to Play Caribbean 21
