As we all know by now, the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting, allowing individual states to decide if they want to legalize it. However, the story isn’t over yet, and a US Senate Judiciary Committee is apparently planning on holding a session on sports betting. The session will determine if there needs to be some federal regulation in how states implement their sports betting regulations.

Sports Betting Could Get Federal Oversight
New Jersey lead the fight to get the ban revoked and ultimately, they were victorious. Since then, numerous states have started the process of legalizing sports betting, with Delaware becoming the first state outside Nevada to offer full-scale sports betting. New Jersey is expected to follow shortly. Now it seems as though the federal government may still want to get involved and have set regulations that states must adhere to.
One of the original authors of the bill that banned sports betting has said that he will work on a new bill to regulate it on a federal level. He will also be a member of the special commission and said that the issues with sports betting today are the same that they were when PASPA was signed into law. The problem is that it is very difficult to keep sports betting within state lines, especially with online betting.
Sports Leagues Want Federal Oversight
Because there is the risk of people from other states, where it could be illegal, placing bets, the federal government wants to impose some standards that will apply to all states that allow sports betting. However, states, where online casinos are legal, have been using geolocation technology to make sure only authorized players are able to gamble. The same thing will probably have to be done with sports betting.
Top sports leagues have also called for some federal regulation, so this will be exactly what the likes of the NBA and NFL want. Federal regulatory guidelines will probably annoy many states that are in the process of legalizing sports betting. We don’t think its necessarily a bad thing, but let’s just hope that if these regulations do happen, they won’t do anything to hurt the new industry.
